MICOP started its radio station, Radio Indígena 94.1, as an online-only access station in 2014. Three years later, the organization was able to raise enough funds to purchase its own antenna and achieve the dream of owning a low-power FM station. . Since its inception, Radio Indígena has been used as the strongest and most effective organization and dissemination tool for indigenous, immigrant and peasant communities. Due to their lower educational level and long hours of manual labor, agricultural workers rely heavily on radio for information and entertainment. Radio Indígena tries to bring the two together to provide programming that is easy to understand and digest in Spanish at the 4th to 6th grade level.Radio Indígena's unique value proposition lies in the additional programming it can provide in at least seven Mixtec, Zapotec and Purépecha languages. As we train farmworkers who speak other indigenous languages as volunteer DJs, we broaden our language base and our reach, connecting other isolated indigenous families with services and programs they would otherwise know little about.
Radio Indígena currently presents 40 hours a week of live programming and traditional indigenous music programmed 24 hours a day. Indigenous Radio presents 23 live radio programs that cover topics from community organization, labor rights, access to health and mental health, self-help and well-being, as well as native indigenous music programs. Of these live radio programs in 2021, six were new programs: "Todo Sobre la Vacuna", "Contigo y al Dia", "La Hora Oaxaqueña", "Chileneando", "Navigators of Health" and El Campesino y Sus Derechos . Radio Indígena recreated the brand, with a new logo, program labels and commitment to educational and musical selection that captures and defines our philosophy and culture.
